Heat pump rebates: TECH California & HEEHRA explained

DEC 26, 2024● So Cal Air● 9 MIN READ

A high-efficiency heat pump is the rare upgrade where the incentives can cover most of the bill. We are one of the first TECH Clean California–approved contractors serving Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank and Beverly Hills.

The programmes, and where they stand

Update, 17 Jan 2025: TECH Clean California has informed participating contractors that the TECH rebate ($1–1.5k) is now fully reserved. A 3CE “Electrify Your Home” incentive is expected to follow.

Why a heat pump at all

One piece of equipment heats and cools. It moves heat rather than making it, which is why it outperforms a furnace on efficiency — a reversing valve simply runs the refrigerant cycle in the other direction when the season turns.

The honest caveat: the savings depend on what you pay for gas versus electricity. We will run your actual numbers before you commit to anything.

What you can claim

For the contractor-handled rebates we file the paperwork and the rebate is passed on to you in full. The federal credit you claim at tax time.

TECH Clean California$1,000 – $1,500
HEEHRA, low incomeup to 100% of cost, max $8,000
HEEHRA, moderate incomeup to 50% of cost, max $4,000
Federal 25C credit30% of cost, max $2,000

Do all heat pumps qualify?

No. Only high-efficiency units at or above the Energy Star equivalent, and some units qualify for a rebate but not the tax credit. This is the detail that most often costs people money, so check it before you sign anything — with us or with anyone else.
