HVAC & duct-cleaning checklist after the fires — where we can help

This past week has been devastating across Los Angeles. Once you are back in your home, the air inside it needs as much attention as the walls — ash and soot travel through ductwork long after the smoke clears. Here is the checklist we work through.

HVAC inspection

Ash and soot get pulled into the system while it runs, then settle in the blower housing, the coil and the return. Start with a full inspection before you run anything for long: change the filter, and have the contaminants removed rather than recirculated.

Air duct cleaning and sanitisation

This is the part that matters most after a fire, and the part most often skipped. Our duct cleaning arm, Airenity, uses high-powered vacuums with rotating brushes and air whips to dislodge what has settled along the duct walls, pulling it out through HEPA-filtered vacuums so it never re-enters the room.

Cleaning is followed by an EPA-approved disinfectant that treats bacteria, viruses, mould spores and the smoke odour that tends to linger in soft surfaces and duct lining.

High-efficiency filter upgrades

Move up to MERV 13 or better, or HEPA where the system supports it, and replace filters more often than the label suggests while particulate is still elevated.

Air scrubber installation

An air scrubber integrates with the HVAC system and targets the volatile organic compounds that come off burnt building materials — the part of post-fire air that a standard filter does not address.

Preventative maintenance, and knowing what to run

We will walk you through ventilation practice and a filter schedule for the months after, and recommend ozone-free HEPA purifiers for the rooms people sleep in.

Emergency service

If your system is down or you are not sure whether it is safe to run, call us — we will get someone out.
